Compelling Portraits by Anton Raphael Mengs (1728–1779)

Anton Raphaël Mengs, Portrait of Isabel Parreño y Arce, Marquesa de Llano. 1771 - 1772, oil on canvas. Rijksmuseum.
Buttons, lace, crinkled fabric or soft lively eyes! Mengs was a master of all those little details that bring a portrait to life.

Anton Raphaël Mengs, Portret van een jong meisje, waarschijnlijk Julie Carlotta Mengs, zuster van de kunstenaar, 1742 - 1744. Rijksmuseum.
I love the fabric in this one, from the lace to the beautiful embroidery of the dress.

Anton Raphael Mengs, Pleasure. ca. 1754, pastel on paper, laid down on canvas. Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Anton Raphael Mengs, Johann Joachim Winckelmann. ca. 1777, oil on canvas. Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Winckelmann was an art historian of sorts! Also friends with the artist. Here he is seen reading a copy of the Iliad.
Anton Raphael Mengs, Self-Portrait. 1776, oil on canvas. Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This self portrait is just incredible. He painted self portraits throughout his career, and this one was done shortly before his death in 1779.
